In Ethiopia the churches were cut downwards, into the rock.
What a day at Lalibela actually covers. Whether the Danakil is survivable in the month you are coming. How much of Addis Ababa a five-hour layover buys. Reviews of every tour you can book in Ethiopia.

5Down the Rift6 Days Omo Valley Tribes Tours From Addis Ababafrom $1,399Ethiopia runs on two circuits and one very large capital.
The historic north, with castles at Gondar and rock churches at Lalibela and Tigray. The south, down the Rift Valley to the Omo. The Danakil out east of both. And Addis Ababa in the middle, where every flight lands and most days out begin.
Almost every Ethiopian trip begins with a spare day in Addis Ababa.
The capital sits at 2,355 metres and nearly every flight into the country lands at Bole. Four kinds of day out from it, what each costs to board, and roughly how long you need on the ground.
The days out more travellers book than anything else in Ethiopia.

Lalibela was not built. It was excavated.
Eleven churches were cut down into the volcanic rock eight centuries ago, roof first, then hollowed out from the inside. They are still parish churches, the tunnels between them still flood in the rains, and the best hour is the one before the light arrives.
Every Lalibela day →The Danakil sits below sea level and gets hotter than anywhere people live.
Yellow sulphur terraces at Dallol, a salt pan camel caravans still cross on foot, and a lava lake at Erta Ale that has not gone out in living memory. Nobody does this one casually. Trips run in convoy, on a schedule built around the heat.
What a day in Ethiopia actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Addis is cheap to spend a day in. The Danakil and the Omo are not, and the gap between them is most of this list.
City days in Addis, the market walks, coffee and cooking, and the short runs north to Debre Libanos.
Lalibela and Gondar on a fixed itinerary, Bahir Dar and the Blue Nile Falls, the shorter treks.

Three things that happen in Ethiopia and nowhere else.
Highlands, markets and old churches turn up all over the region. Coffee served three times from the same pot, a church cut downwards out of one piece of rock, and a monkey that lives on grass do not.

The Coffee Ceremony
Coffee grew wild here before it grew anywhere else, and the ceremony still runs the same way: green beans roasted in front of you, ground by hand, brewed in a clay jebena and poured from a height into small cups. It is served three times from the one pot, abol, tona and baraka, and leaving after the first round is the rude bit.

Bete Giyorgis
The most famous of the Lalibela churches is a cross, forty feet deep, carved down into the ground from a single block of rock with nothing added and nothing built up. You see the roof first, at your feet, and walk down a trench to reach the door. Priests still keep it, and the drainage channels cut around it eight hundred years ago still work.

The Gelada
Geladas are the only primate that lives almost entirely on grass, and the only place they live at all is the Ethiopian highlands. They sleep on ledges below the escarpment and climb up at first light to graze in troops of a hundred or more, which is why the walking here is early and the animals barely look up as you pass.

Four Ethiopian bookings that will not wait until you land.
Plenty of this country can be arranged over breakfast the morning of. These four run on convoy departures, permits and internal flights that fill up long before your plane does.
- 013 Days Danakil Depression TourDanakil trips leave on set days in convoy with an escort and a fixed vehicle count. Miss the departure and the next one may be days away.
- 026 Days Omo Valley Tribes Tours From Addis AbabaThe southern road takes several days each way and the group leaves when it is full. Nobody adds a seat once the vehicles are loaded.
- 03Visiting Lalibela churchesAlmost everyone flies in. Domestic seats are cheap only if booked with the international ticket, and they sell out around the January festival.
- 0412 Days SIMIEN MOUNTAIN-LALIBELA-DANAKIL-TIGRAY CHURCHESThe park charges per day and every group walks with a scout, arranged in advance at Debark rather than at the trailhead.
Ethiopia has one wet season and a lot of thin air. Plan around both.
The big rains run from late June into September, which turns the northern roads to mud and closes the Danakil in all but name. Addis sits high enough that a first afternoon leaves people short of breath. The answer to both is the same: keep the first day indoors and low-effort, and let the altitude do its work.
Gondar’s castles, Tigray’s cliff churches, and the Blue Nile leaving Lake Tana.
The old capitals sit in a loop north of Addis Ababa. A walled royal compound at Gondar, island monasteries out on Tana, and churches in Tigray you reach by climbing to them. Most people fly between the stops and drive one leg for the view.
By place, capital to escarpment
By kind of day, church, crater, market or road
Addis, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Lalibela: the loop almost everybody flies first.
